2023 Summer Blockbusters

Summer is just around the corner which means big summer blockbusters are headed your way. Throughout the next four months many hot titles will be released. These are the top 15 to be on the lookout for. 


Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3

May 5

After a long time Disney's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is finally going to be here. James Gun returns as director to finish this trilogy off. The returning cast of Crist Pratt (Star lord), Dave Bautista (Drax), Zoe Saldena, (Gamora) Karen Gillian (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Vin Diesel (Groot), and Bradley Cooper (Rocket) come together for one last mission that will dig into the origins of Rocket Raccoon. This film also will be introducing Adam Warlock who will be played by Will Poulter. The MCU has had a rough few years but there is hope that this movie will be good. James Gun has shown us with the previous Guardians films as well as the 2020 Suicide Squad film that he is made for these goofy superhero team up films.


Fast X

May 19

Releasing on May 19 is the tenth installment to the Fast and Furious Franchise Universal Studios’ Fast X. This high-speed action film directed by Louis Leterroer sees returning star Vin Diesel alongside Ludacris, John Cena, Michelle Rodriques, Sung Kang Jason Statham and many more. This film introduces Jason Momoa who plays the antagonist, who is seeking revenge against vin diesel and his family. These Fast and the Furious films always tend to be way over the top when it comes to the action scenes but time and time again, they prove that these movies are meant to be fun not good.  


The Little Mermaid

May 26

Little Mermaid: Disney has been making live action adaptations of their animated classics and the big film coming to theaters next is the Little Mermaid on May 26. This film stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder as Daveed Digs as Sebastian. This film will not be a shot for shot remake like the Lion King but just a live action reimagining of the film like Aladdin and Mulan. 


Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse

June 2

Spiderman: across the Spider-verse is going to be the “big” animated movie of the summer. Sony will be releasing this film on June 2 and will be a direct sequel to the 2019 film Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse and will feature returning voice work from Shameik Moore (Miles Morales), Jake Johnson (Peter B. Parker), Hailee Steinfeld (Gwen Stacy) and many more. This adventure will see Miles being chased through different universes by Spiderman 2099, Miguel O’hara, voiced by Oscar Isaac. There are many different visual art styles that will be shown off in this film and looks like it could be a lot of fun just like processor  


Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

June 9

Paramount Pictures' new transformers film hits the block office on June 9. This installment takes place in the 1990s and sees the Maximals, Predacons and Terrorcons as they join the battle between the Autobots and Decepticons on Earth. This film will feature returning Autobots such as Optimus Prime and Bumblebee but will also see other transformers make their debut. Ron Perlman will voice Optimus Primal and Pete Davidson will voice Mirage to name a few.


Elemental

June 16

This summer the big family film to be on the lookout is going to be Pixar’s Elemental releasing on June 16. This animated feature follows two elements who are quite different learn about how they have a lot in common. Leah Lewis voices Lumen, a young fire woman and Mamoudou Athie voices wade a go with the flow water guy, and together they are residents in a city where fire, water land and air residents come together.  


Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Harrison Ford returns to play Indiana Jones in Lucasfilm and Disney’s Indian Jones and the Dial of Destiny hitting theaters on June 30. The cast of this film will feature Mads Mikkelsen, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Bandereas, Boyd Holbrook and Shaunette Renee Wilson to name a few.  This installment of Indiana Jones will see a retired jones whose rival from the past comes into his life with an ancient artifact.

The Flash

June19

After many years the Flash film will be releasing on April 25. Ezra miller will return to star in the role of Barry Allen/ the Flash. Alongside him there will be a number of returning fan favorite characters. Ben Affleck will be reprising his role as Bruce Wayne Batman, Michael Shannon will return as General Zod, and Michael Keaton will be returning to Bruce Wayne Batman as well. This film is adapting the Flashpoint comic storyline where the Flash tries to change the events of the past and in doing so returns to a universe that is not his own


Insidious: The Red Door

For those horror lovers, the big horror film to lookout for this summer is Sony pictures’ Insidious: Red Door releasing on July 17. In this film Dalton’s (Ty Simpkins) repressed demons of his past suddenly start haunting him while he is away at college. This is the fifth installment in the Insidious franchise which became popular during the 2010’s

Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Park One

July 14

On July 14, Paramount Pictures’ Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One will be released in theaters. This film will have two parts which will lead to the Mission Impossible finale. Tom Cruise will return to play Ethan Hunt alongside other returning cast Simon Pegg (Benji Dunn) and Ving Rhames. Tom Cruise will continue to do his own stunts in this movie and always try to one up himself in each installment. This film should be a fun exciting experience


Oppenheimer

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer will be released on July 21. This historical drama follows physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer as he works with a team of scientists on the Manhattan Project, which developed the Atomic Bomb during World War II.  Cillian Murphy stars as Oppenhiemerand is costarred by Robert Downey Jr, Florence Pugh, Jack Quaid, Matt Damon and Rami Malek.

Barbie

July 21

Warner Bros Pictures Barbie will hit box offices on July 21. This romantic comedy live action adaptation of Barbie stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. Together they leave Barbieland and set off for the human world to experience what happiness really is.


Haunted Mansion

Releasing on July 28 is Disney’s Haunted Mansion. This is a new reimaging of the Disney owned Haunted Mansion. This live action film stars Jared Leto, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Lakeith Stanfield and Jamie Lee Curtis, where a women and son live in a haunted house and call spiritual experts to rid their home of the supernatural spirits lurking there.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

August 4

The final animated movie of the summer comes in the form of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem hitting theaters on August 4. This film is the origin story of the turtles and follows them as they try to get accepted as normal teenagers by the New Yorkers. This film will be packed with characters other than the turtles, splinter and April. This film will also feature Bebop, Rocksteady, Baxter, and superfly to name a few. This animated feature looks like it uses a similar animated style to that of Sony’s Spider verse films but looks like it can pull it off and make a fun film with it.


Blue Beetle

Ending the summer of 2023 will be the first film in James Guns DCU, Blue Beatle. Warner Bros will be releasing the Blue Beatle to theaters on August 18. This film originally was slated as an HBO Max exclusive but has been changed for a theatrical release. Ther Bleu Beatle stars Xolo Mariduena as Jaime Reyes, Bruna Marquezine, George Lopez, Raoul Trujilo, Belissa Escobedo, and Susan Sarandon. This film is the origin story of the Blue Beetle and will show Jaime Reyes encountering the Scarab and becoming a symbiotic host with it.
