Across The Spider-Verse Review

Sony’s, Spiderman Across the Spider verse, was released in theaters on June 2, 2023.  This animated feature is the follow to the 2018 film, Spiderman into the Spider verse.  Across the spider verse is a great film that expands the Sony spider verse.  Set one year and four months after the first film, Miles Morales juggles living his double life as a high school student and being Spider-Man. He is now alone after his friends left at the end of the first film. Feeling lost he travels to different universes looking for acceptance from the Society of Spiderman. Instead, they must save the multiverse from being destroyed against a universal jumping villain.

This film has a returning voice cast of Shameik Moor (Miles Morales), Hailee Steifield (Gwen Stacy), Jake Johnson (Spider-Man) and Brian Tyreen Henry (Jefferson Morales) as well as some new faces to the spider verse.  Oscar Isaac joins the film as Miguel O’Hara, Daniel Kaluuya voices Spider Punk and Issa Rae as Spider-Women, just to name a few.  This film is packed with many different variations of spiderman that make cameo appearances.  A majority of them do not have voice dialogue but others do, and this was quite fun deciphering who the voices are behind them.

The animation and art styles used in this film are beautifully crafted.  Each Universe that is shown in this film features a different art style. One of the worlds that was shown off was Earth- 65, where Gwen Stacy is from. This universe used a “watercolor-wash style”.  In this universe the colors are always changing depending on the emotion of the scene.  You can actually feel the emotion of the of this world.  Each world has something that makes them unique.

To add to the amazing animation that this film had there is more to talk about than just the worlds that Sony created.  The different versions of Spiderman that were featured in this film had different art styles as well.  There were way too many that appeared in this film to name them all, but the ones that stuck out for me were the live action characters; Lego Spiderman, Spider Punk, and Spiderman 2099, whose animation style was based on Syd Mead illustrations.

Across the Spider verse is packed with easter eggs and references to everything spiderman.  Whether the characters are referencing the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony Spider verse, The Spiderman video game, comics, toys and much more.  There were many times throughout this film where I felt that there was an overload of these characters and references but that did not hinder the film.  It only made me want to rewatch it again to spot all the missing characters and references that I did not see.

Overall, Across the Spider Verse is a great film from beginning to end and is fun for the whole family.  It offers a great coming of age story with amazing dialogue.  This film has it all, humor, action, love, sadness and much more.

Overall Score: 10/10
