The Sages before Tears of the Kingdom

The Great sages in The Legends of Zelda series were reintroduced in Tears of the Kingdom. Sages are recurring characters that serve as a link between the Sacred Realm and the land of Hyrule.  With the release of The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom there are now eleven Sages total.   The first time the Sages appeared was in Ocarina of time on the Nintendo 64 in 1996. The Sages then made their returns again in both the Windwaker for the GameCube in 2002 and A Link Between Worlds for the 3DS in 2013.

Daruni, Saria, Darunia, Ruto, Impa Naburro, Zelda

The Ocarina of Time features seven Sages that help Link in defeating Ganondorf.  Saria of the Kokiri Forest and Links childhood friend is the Forest Sage.  The Leader of the Goron Race Darunia is the Sage of Fire. Ruto is the Sage of water, she is the Princess of the Zoras and is to be Links bride.  Naburru of Gerudo tribe out in the desert is the sage of Spirit.  The last two Sages are Zelda’s advisor and bodyguard, Impa of the Sheikah tribe, and Princess Zelda herself.  Impa holds the Sage of Shadow while Zelda is the leader of the sages.  After Link defeats the evil that has taken over the temples, he is able to awaken each sage.  He is awarded a medallion that holds the power of the sage together they are able to defeat Ganon.

The Windwaker features two new sages in addition to the Seven that have already been established, the Earth and Wind Sages.  During the Windwaker Ganondorf kills the Wind and Earth sages.  Laurto of the Zora tribe was the previous Sage of Earth.  She Grants her powers to Medli from Rito Village, and she becomes Laruto’s successor as the Sage of Earth.  Fado is a Kokri and the is previous Sage of Wind. Similar to Laurto he grants Makar, who is a Korok of the Korok forest, the sage of the Wind.

In A Link Between Worlds, there are Seven Sages who descendants of the sages who defeated the Great Demon King. In order to revive Ganon, Yuga kidnaps each of the Sages and turns them into paintings. The Sages in this game are not identified by elements and of powers past.  They are only named as one of the Seven Sages of the descendants.  These include Osfala, Gulley, Rosso, Oren, Impa, Irene, and Seres.
