Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge Review

Teenage Mutant Ninja turtle: Shredders Revenge is a side scrolling beat ‘em up game developed by Tribute games and published by Dotemu.  Shredder’s Revenge was released for all major consoles on June 16, 2022. Like other Ninja Turtle games there is a multiplayer function but unlike the other games Shredder’s Revenge allows you to play with up to six players.  Many other titles would allow 2 players or up to four.

Shredders Revenge has more playable characters than just the turtles you can choose to play as Leonardo, Donatello, Michealangelo, Rafael, Master Splinter, Casey Jones, and April O'Neil.  Each character has different base stats when it comes to speed, range and power.  For example, Donatello has the best range and Rafael has the best power.  Each character has similar attack moves but their special attack moves use different animations than others.  For example, when Casy Jones uses an air special attack, he slams a basketball down as if he was dunking like NBA Hall of Famer Shaq.  April O'Neil does this same move but uses a camera rather than a ball, the same thing as the other characters.

This game features sixteen stages for you to play through and each one ends with a boss battle.  These levels either involve running and jumping to get to the finish like the level “Mall Meltdown!” or skating on the hoover boards dodging roadblocks and fighting enemies, like in “Mutant’s over Broadway!”.  Each level is designed with an old school art style to make it look as if you are playing an arcade game, but much cleaner.  There is a wide variety of themed levels in this game whether you are you like fighting around the city streets, the sewers, and even in space.

When the players finally make it to the end of the level, they will encounter a boss battle.  These encounters can be single bosses or multi boss battles. Beebo, Rocksteady, and Krang make appearances in this game as well as many other Ninja Turtle enemies like the Rat King, Wingnut, Leatherhead, and Baxter Stockman to name a few.  The boss' battles themselves are rather easy in difficult but can be tricky at first.  The bosses have attack and move patterns that are specific to them, but once you can figure out their moves a lot of it is dodging and using special attacks.  These boss battles are even easier when playing multiplayer.  Obviously having more people will make the fights easier but this takes it to a new level. One person's special attack does about 20% of damage.  So, when multiple players use special attacks, you can defeat the hardest bosses in two hits.

Shredder’s Revenge is an overall great title with only two things holding it back and those are the length and difficulty.  There are sixteen levels in this game but ech level is rather short in duration, which makes the stories runtime at about 2.5 hours.  However, there are collectables to find and challenges to beat in each level which will keep you going back for that 100% completion.  With all this added up the run time for the game is about 9-10 hours.

The gameplay of this turtle’s game feels as if you are at an arcade back in the 80’s trying to beat a game with your friends. This turtle's installment feels like a blast from the past. This is a great game to play with a group of friends for an evening of gaming.
