10 Best selling games Switch Games

Nintendo released its newest system, the Nintendo Switch, on March 3, 2017. The Nintendo Switch is a hybrid video game console, where the console itself is tablet that can be docked for home console use or used as a portable device. Since its release Nintendo has sold 125.62 million units as of March 2023 making the Switch its most successful console, but what were the gamers playing. Nintendo has announced their most successful games in units sold. One of the last big title releases came out this week in the form of Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. Prior to this release what were the top selling games and where it will stand in the top ten  The games below are Nintendo's top 10 selling games as of May 1, 2023

  1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

53.79 Million Units

The Number one selling game on the Nintendo Switch is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. This Mario Kart title was originally released on the Wii U on May 29, 2014, but was eventually ported to the Nintendo Switch on April 28,2017. The Nintendo Switch port includes all of the original DLC in Mario Kart 8, as well as an altered battle mode and new exclusive courses which are still being released. New waves are being added to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in the form of the Booster pass, which adds two new cups and now they have been releasing new characters as well. Mario Kart 8 has essentially two games worth of karts, maps and characters which keeps players coming back. It makes sense that this game sits at the number one spot because this titles was released early into the Switches life on and is still adding new things to it. This game was soo popular when people were purchasing switches, eventually Nintendo bundled them together. Now almost every switch that is purchased comes with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, similar to Wii Sports with the Nintendo Wii.


2. Animal Crossing: New Horizons

42.21 Million Units

Animal Crossing New Horizons was released on March 20, 2020 which was during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. pandemic and many people around the world were playing Animal Crossing during the stay at home orders/quarantines. This was the fifth Animal Crossing title in series and the first one that was released on the Switch. Animal Crossing New Horizons is a social simulation game where players live on an island, recruit residents, craft items and much more. This game was widely popular with people of all ages. Each player has their own island that is unique to them, and they can show off their island to other players online. New horizons also released a paid DLC called the Happy home Paradise, where the player designs vacation homes for residents and ones just visiting. This expansion allows the player access to more building and designing features. This game offers many hours of replay ability so you will not get bored


3. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

31.09 Million Units

The popular crossover fighting game Super Smash Bros. Latest installment Ultimate was its most successful. Released on December 7, 2018, and this fighting game lives up to its “Ultimate” name, by offering 70 playable characters at launch in 103 different stages. Ultimate brings back every character that has ever been featured as a playable character as well as some new faces. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate offers many different game modes to play such as tournaments, team battles, strike squad, a story mode, challenges and many more. All of this was added at launch, there are DLC waves that offer the players new characters and stages. These DLC characters include Piranha Plant, Joker, Hero, Banjo & Kazooie, Terry, Byleth, Min Min, Steve/Alex, Sephiroth, Pyr/Mythra, Kazuya, and Sora. Each new character has a stage inspired by the game that they are featured in. With all these characters on the roster, it is very easy for just about anyone to pick this game up and find a character that best suits them. 


4. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 

29.81 Million Units

The Legend of Zelda Breath of Wild was released on March 3, 2017, the same day as the Nintendo Switch. This Zelda installment was released for both the Switch and the Wii U. Breath of the Wild introduced new complete open world mechanics to Zelda which created hours upon hours of exploration. Nintendo blew everyone away with this installment for several reasons; the map is huge and is packed with hundreds and hundreds of puzzles scattered around, big bosses hanging around waiting for you to fight them, and lots of side quests. All of these do things do not even touch the story. This game offers so much replay ability because when playing there will be things that you have missed, whether it is the shrines, Korok seeds or just abandoned towns and camps. This game has a complete sandbox experience, and you have control to do just about anything you wish to do, such as fishing, hunting, and cooking. This game also had DLC that was added to it in the form of the Master Trials, which included a combat arena where Link can compete against waves of enemies in different settings, and the Champions Ballad, a harder remix of the Dungeons and bosses. 


5. Pokémon Sword and Shield

25.82 Million units

Pokémon Sword and Shield were released on November 15, 2019, and was the first mainline Pokémon game to be released on home console. Prior to this game each mainline installment was released on the handheld. Developed by Gamefreak and published by the Pokémon Company and Nintendo. In this Pokémon adventure the player is sent to Galar region, inspired by Great Britain. There was a total of 81 new Pokémon that were introduced in this generation as well as 13 new Galarian forms of existing Pokémon, like Slowpoke and Ziggzagoon. Pokémon Sword introduces new gaming mechanics that make this one of the better installments that has been released. This includes the Dynamax feature, raids, and visually seeing the Pokémon before encounters. To add to the main game Pokémon Sword and Shield has two waves of DLC, the Crown Tundra and the Isle of Armor, which adds even more Galarian forms and legendary Pokémon. The units sold for this game includes both Pokémon Sword and Shield 


6. Super Mario Odyssey

25.76 Million units

Super Mario Odessey was released on October 27, 2017, and people began pre ordering it as soon as they seen the first trailers for this game. Odessey is a 3D platformer adventure that sees Mario travel to many different themed worlds collecting Power Moons and trying to save Peach from Bowser. Mario is accompanied by Cappy, who gives Mario the ability to control different objects and enemies who are scattered throughout the many different worlds. Each world is gigantic in size compared to levels in Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy and is beautifully designed and has majestic music that follows. Nintendo boxed this game together with the Switch for a limited time, which shows how popular this game was during the early years of the Switch.  


7. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet 

22.10 Million units

Pokémon Violette and Scarlet are the newest installments in the Pokémon franchise and sold quite well for how poorly the game played. This was the second title to be released specifically for the Switch. In this Pokémon adventure you travel to the Paldea region based of the Iberian Peninsula to become a Pokémon master. This game offers 110 new Pokémon and three stories in the campaign; defeating team Star, victory Road, and the Titan Pokémon. There has been no DLC to be released for these Pokémon games yet, but they have been announced. The Teal Mask is slated for release in fall 2023 and the Indigo Disk will be released in Winter 2023. These will both continue the story but there is not much else known about them. Similar to Pokémon Sword and Shield the number of units moved is both of them combined. 


8. Super Mario Party

19.14 Million units

Mario Party Superstars was released on October 29, 2021, and developed by NDcube. Mario Party Superstars was a big hit for gamers because this game was a remake, but it was not at the same time. This Mario Party installment features boards from Mario Party 1-3 and 100 minigames that were featured throughout Mario Party 1-7. This game spruced up the graphics, gameplay, and added a few new mechanics and game modes to the game. In this title there is an online mode where players can play minigames or party mode online with their friends. Mario Party Superstars is a fun game for people of all ages especially with multiple numbers of people playing at once.  


9. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

15.41 million units

Similar to Mario Kart 8, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe was ported to the switch from a previous console.  This title was originally released on the Wii U in 2014, then was rereleased as the deluxe package which includes New Super Luigi Bros as well.  This installment in the Super Mario franchise is a side scrolling adventure just like the original Mario Bros that was released on NES in 1985 where you can play as Mario, Luigi, Toad, Toadette and Nabbit on a journey across different themed worlds and levels in order to save Princess Peach, while Super Luigi Bros, Mario is the one who needs rescuing. There are many new powerups that were added in this game as well the bubble mechanic created for those who cannot get pas certain jumps or bosses. This Mario installment is a great multiplayer game that was created for people of all ages, kids and adults to play this game and it is even more fun when done together. It is possible for four different players to play at once,


10.Ring Fit Adventure

15.38 million units

Ring fit Adventure is an exercise action game developed by Nintendo.  This motion game comes with the Ring con and leg strap accessory that you connect your left and right Joy Cons. When playing this game, the player must run or walk in place to move the character along the given route for each level.  The faster you move your legs in place, the faster the character will run.  The Ring con is used for aiming and turning your character.  This game offers more than just running and walking, there are paddle board, flying, and kart courses.  After the courses there are enemies that you must defeat where the player must do exercises like squats or crunches to defeat.  This game sold very well because these exercises can be intense and fun at the same time.  Ring Fit Adventure is the Wii Fit of the Switch.
