Super Mario Bros. Wonder Review

Nintendo has released a potential game of the year with their newest Mario installment, Super Mario Bros. Wonder for the Nintendo Switch. Released on October 1 “Wonder” was both developed and produced by Nintendo. It is the first new traditional side scrolling Super Mario since the release of “New Super Mario Bros. U in 2012 for the Wii U.

In this Mario adventure, Mario and friends travel to the Flower Kingdom, to meet Prince Floria. Here Bowser steals a Wonder Flower from the Prince which throws the Kingdom into disarray. The citizens of the Flower Kingdom become imprisoned by Bowser and his forces. Mario and the company must travel through the Flower Kingdom saving the citizens and collecting Wonder Seeds.

Wonder introduces a new gameplay mechanic called Wonder Seeds. Each course contains a wonder stage that must be collected. When coming in contact with these Wonder Seeds, the level will begin to change. These seeds have many different effects. Some will take Mario up into the sky, while others call stampedes of rhinos. These effects are quite trippy and have a hallucination vibe which has been designed wonderfully.

In this Mario side-scrolling adventure you can choose between eight different characters: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Toad, Toadette, Nabbit, and Yoshi. Yoshi comes in four different color variations. Each character has the same stats except for Yoshi and Nabbit. Yoshi can use his hover step when jumping and also does not take any physical damage. Nabbit also has this feature of no damage. Up to four players can join locally for the ultimate adventure. In past Mario installments multiplayer mode could be quite difficult and annoying when everyone is trying to complete jumps and dodge enemies. Often you will find yourself bumping into each other or accidentally tossing your friend off of the stage. In Super Mario Bros. Wonder, this mechanic is removed. The players will run past each other rather than bumping into them. Now the players do not have to worry about eliminating their partner.

Super Mario Wonder offers many different beautiful levels that are complemented with great music. In this Mario adventure, you will travel through deserts, forests, and volcanoes to name a few. While running and jumping through the stages, the music follows Mario’s action. For example, when Mario executes a ground pound, symbols to a drum play. There are many fun sound effects that fit perfectly in this game.

It has been many years since a brand-new side scrolling Mario game to be released and Wonder has been worth the wait. This game is great all around, it fixes the problems that other installments had as well as implanting new features. Super Mario Bros. Wonder definitely lives up to its name because this game is quite wonderful.

Overall Score: 9/10
