SNES Remake Wishlist

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) was released in 1990 in its home country of Japan in 1990. The SNES is the second home console developed by Nintendo. The first being the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).  With its enhanced 16-bit system compared to its predecessor’s 8-bit, the SNES’s software gives games enhanced visuals and audio.  Nintendo released many titles on the SNES, some of these were masterpieces while others were just awful to say the least.  As the years went on many of these games began being ported to other systems.  The first versions of them were released on the Gameboy Color (GBA) and then eventually on the Nintendo Virtual Console.  Now players have access to the SNES emulator on the Switch.  This emulator has a vast catalogue of SNES games that players can access like Super Mario World, Super Metroid, and Donkey Kong Country.

Nintendo has just announced that Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars will receive a remake that will be released later this year.  Fans were annoyed when this game was missing in the SNES virtual console catalogue, but instead we are getting a full HD remake of Super Mario RPG.  With enhanced graphics in both the open world, cutscenes, and battle mode a remake this game looks like it is going to be a great move.  Hopefully it succeeds so Nintendo will put efforts into remaking more Super Nintendo Entertainment System titles.  Here are five SNES titles that would be worth remaking.

5. Star Fox

Star Fox is a rail shooter game developed by Nintendo and Argonaut Software.  Released in 1993 Star Fox was the first 3D Nintendo game for home console.  Star Fox uses both third person and first-person 3D views.  In this game the player controls Fox McCloud’s spacecraft, the Arwing, through obstacles and enemies.  Each level has a boss that the player must defeat in order to proceed through the game.  Nintendo released Star Fox as a part of the SNES Classic Edition in 2017 and was made available on Nintendo Switch Online in 2019.  In 1997 Nintendo released Star Fox 64, which was a reboot of the original Star Fox title.  If Nintendo were to do this again it would be a great move because the Star Fox franchise has been quiet for a number of years.  Star Fox 64 was successful both commercially and critically and this could be done to reboot the franchise again.

4. F-Zero

F-Zero was released as a launch title for the SNES in 1990.  This fast-paced arcade style race game was inspired by Formula One racing.  Set in the future the player can choose between four racers who have their own unique hover car.  F-Zero offers fifteen tracks divided into three leagues with the difficulty increasing with each race. F-Zero began obtaining popularity after this and sequels were released for the N64 and GameCube, but there has not been an F-Zero title since.

This game needs game needs a remake because if you are an arcade racing fan your options on the Switch are quite limited including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Hot Wheels, and Nickelodeon Kart Racer.  Mario Kart 8 Deluxe currently dominates the racing genre. It is a nearly perfect game with great mechanics and amazing visuals.  It offers such a variety when it comes to courses, characters, and karts and Nintendo could implement this into an F-Zero remake.

3. Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger is a Japanese roleplaying game which was developed and published by Squaresoft.  The game’s story follows a small group of adventure seekers who are sent through time to prevent a global catastrophe.  Chrono Trigger is one of those titles that always get brought up in the discussion of greatest games of all time.  There are many things that Chrono Trigger offers that made it such a revolutionary title including multiple endings, plot related side-quests that focusses on character development, a unique battle system and detailed 2D graphics.  Chrono Trigger was the second-best selling game of 1995 in its home country of Japan and by March 2003 shipped 2.65 million copies worldwide.   Chrono Trigger was ported to the Nintendo DS in North America and Japan in 2008 and made for download on the Virtual Console PlayStation Network, iOS, Android, and Windows.

Similar to Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger was not featured in the SNES catalogue on the Nintendo Switch which angered fans.  All the other games on this list were featured titles on the Nintendo Switch Online except this one. Rather than adding to the SNES online catalogue Chrono Trigger should get a complete remake following Super Mario RPG.

2. Earthbound

One of the biggest cult-classic SNES games next to Super Mario RPG is Earthbound. Earthbound is a Japanese Role-playing game developed by both Ape Inc. and HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo in 1994.  Earthbound is the sequel to the NES title named “Mother” in Japan and “Earthbound Beginnings’ elsewhere.  In this adventure the player journeys with Ness and his party; Paula, Jeff, and Poo around the world collecting melodies from the eight sanctuaries in order to defeat the universal cosmic destroyer Giygas. The journey takes Ness and friends to many exotic places, meeting wacky NPCs, and defeating quite interesting enemies.  Earthbound was ported to the Gameboy Advance in in 2006 with a Japan exclusive release and eventually came to the rest of the world on the Wii U and 3DS virtual Consoles in 2016, the SNES Classic in 2018 and Nintendo Switch Online in February 2022.

An Earthbound remake would make perfect sense to make if Super Mario RPG succeeds because both share similarities in game features.  Just like the previously mentioned Chrono Trigger, these titles involve turn based battle mechanics and the party system in which your group members follow you in a line around the open world.  Earthbound needs to get a remake because the franchise has halted since the release of Mother 3.  Most people know the Earthbound characters from Super Smash Bros and a remake of this game could bring new players to the Mother franchise.

1. Legend Of Zelda: A Link to the Past

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is an action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo.  Originally released in Japan in 1991 and 1992 elsewhere, this is the third game in the Legend of Zelda series.  This story takes place many years before the events of the first two Zelda games.  Link must defeat the Demon King Ganon and rescue the descendants of the Seven Sages in order to save Hyrule. It was ported to the Gameboy Advance in 2002 in the form of the Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past and Four Swords which sold quite well.  Following this release Link to the Past was available through the virtual consoles on the Wii, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS and eventually the Nintendo Switch through the Nintendo Online Expansion Pass. Link to the Past is widely considered one of the greatest video games that has been released but never obtained a remake.

The Legend of Zelda remakes are nothing new.  There have been remakes of many 3D Zelda titles, but the most significant remake in recent years has been with the release of the Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening.  This top view 2D adventure received its full remake in 2018 and this format could be followed with a Link to the Past.
